Musculoskeletal modelling enables investigation of internal anatomical structures that are difficult to measure experimentally. Progress in this field is further made difficult due to lack of freely available anatomical datasets. Moreover, most of the existing models are predominantly based on Caucasian anatomical morphologies, while asian models remain significantly underrepresented in publicly accessible datasets. To solve this, a three-dimensional musculoskeletal geometries was segmented from magnetic resonance imaging of an asian anatomy. Muscles, bones, cartilage, meniscus and ligaments from pelvis to foot were segmented and exported. The resulting datasets provides foundation for future works in human musculoskeletal simulations. The novelty of this work lies in the development and sharing of a lower-extremity musculoskeletal model representing an average asian male. Notes
| MRI scans: The MRI scans are shared in DICOM format. It consists of compiled segments in all the sequences. The names of the sequences for the MRI used are as follows: 1. RT T1 VIBE SAG DIXON_IN 2. RT T1 VIBE SAG DIXON_F 3. RT T2 SPC SAG L - LIMB 4. RT T2 FS SPC SAG L - LIMB 5. RT T1 VIBE SAG DIXON FS L - LIMB 6. T1 VIBE SAG DIXON_OPP L - LIMB 7. T1 SAG VIBE DIXON_W L – LIMB Final 3D model: The final model can be directly utilized for analysis without requiring additional processing. Each structure was visually inspected to ensure there were no surface protrusions, openings and overlaps. The full model has a total of 13 bones, 4 cartilages, 5 ligaments, 42 muscles structures, 1 meniscus and 2 tendons. Overall, 67 geometries were segmented from the MRI. In the model, the skeletal components consist of the pelvis to foot, the ligaments and cartilage components of the knee, 42 muscle components from most proximal psoas major to most distal abductor digiti minimi, and addition of knee meniscus, Archilles tendon, quadriceps tendon and patella ligament. Segmentation mask: The segmentation masks created are compatible with 3D slicer software in nrrd file format. Segmentation masks of the final model with labels were added to allow other researchers to inspect and adjust the model. |
