Musculoskeletal modelling provides a valuable approach for examining internal anatomical structures that are challenging to assess through experimental methods. However, advancement in this area is constrained by the limited availability of open-access anatomical datasets. In addition, most existing models are derived primarily from Caucasian anatomical characteristics, with Asian populations being considerably underrepresented in publicly available resources. To address this gap, a three-dimensional musculoskeletal geometry was developed using magnetic resonance imaging data of an Asian subject. Key anatomical components, including bones, muscles, cartilage, menisci, and ligaments spanning from the pelvis to the foot, were carefully segmented. The resulting dataset establishes a comprehensive foundation for future research in musculoskeletal simulation and analysis. The main contribution of this work is the creation and sharing of a lower-extremity musculoskeletal model that reflects the anatomical features of an average Asian male. (2026-04-14)

| MRI scans: The combined MRI scans from hip to foot in different sequences are shared in DICOM format. The MRI sequences used for this study are: 1. RT T1 VIBE SAG DIXON_IN 2. RT T1 VIBE SAG DIXON_F 3. RT T2 SPC SAG L - LIMB 4. RT T2 FS SPC SAG L - LIMB 5. RT T1 VIBE SAG DIXON FS L - LIMB 6. T1 VIBE SAG DIXON_OPP L - LIMB 7. T1 SAG VIBE DIXON_W L – LIMB Final 3D model: The final model shared can be used in analysis without needing additional processing. The final model was checked to ensure there were no surface protrusions, openings and overlaps.The complete model comprises 67 geometries, including 42 muscles, 13 bones, 5 ligaments, 4 cartilage structures, 2 tendon and 1 meniscus. The model includes skeletal structures spanning from the pelvis to the foot, along with knee ligaments and cartilage components. It also incorporates 42 muscle structures, ranging from the most proximal psoas major to the most distal abductor digiti minimi. In addition, key soft tissues such as the knee meniscus, Achilles tendon, quadriceps tendon, and patellar ligament are included. Segmentation mask: The generated segmentation masks are provided in NRRD format and are fully compatible with 3D Slicer. Labeled masks of the final model are also included, enabling other researchers to review, refine, and modify the dataset as needed. |
